As chair of Dinsmore\u2019s IP litigation and enforcement group, Karen Gaunt\u00a0follows baseball closely, and not just how the Reds are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a feature for the 2024 Ohio Super Lawyers Magazine<\/a>, Karen talks about her work with\u00a0USA Baseball\u00a0and the\u00a0World Baseball Softball Confederation. Karen stays busy with NIL work, licensing and agreement work, athlete health and safety matters\u00a0and governance while supporting\u00a0global efforts to get baseball and softball back into the Summer Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIP lawsuits take years and years,\u201d Gaunt says. \u201cThe longest I had was nearly six years. A partner in my group has had a case that\u2019s been going on for well over a decade.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things move a bit faster with another of Gaunt\u2019s clients: USA Baseball, the national governing body for the sport\u2019s amateurs. Gaunt is the organization\u2019s outside general counsel, and most of her work there is transactional. \u201cI field anything and everything that may come up,\u201d she says. Gaunt pulls in other lawyers at her firm for areas outside her specialty, with her knowledge of the organization adding value and context.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\/<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

USA Baseball found her in 2008, when a colleague who was doing trademark work for the league recommended Gaunt to help with contracts, licensing, and cease-and-desists. \u201cIt just grew from there,\u201d she says.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, she\u2019s assisted with everything from insurance and real estate to immigration and tax issues. \u201cThey have all sorts of general commercial-type matters that don\u2019t really fall neatly into any box,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I\u2019ve been able to do for them just because I\u2019ve worked for them for so long and have stayed connected with everything they have going on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
