An excerpt is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The pace of large law firm mergers may have slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a slew of mid-sized firms have unveiled pending combinations for 2022. They can draw some technology and operations lessons from a set of recent tie-ups, where Holland &amp; Knight, Dinsmore &amp; Shohl and Thompson Coburn all absorbed smaller firms.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Interviews with leaders at these firms show some degree of disruption is bound to be inevitable when combining the IT systems and related operations of two discrete businesses, particularly since it\u2019s impossible to get a full view of how the mechanisms will fit together until a combination is finalized. But when done right, the lawyers are the ones who are least affected.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dinsmore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/srl-crops\/Lorentz-Josh-2020_Circle.srl-crop-1.png\" alt=\"Josh Lorentz was featured in a recent American Lawyer article.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s often the staff that\u2019s going to have the toughest time with the transition,\u201d said Dinsmore &amp; Shohl IP department chair and finance committee chair Josh Lorentz, who helped facilitate the firm\u2019s merger with 47-attorney Wooden McLaughlin at the start of 2021. \u201cLawyers serve the clients the same way, clients interact with lawyers the same way, but the staff that handles the internal systems, that\u2019s where the heartburn comes for having to integrate the two teams.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One critical challenge is that these professionals are limited in what they can do until a merger is finalized, thanks to ethics rules governing the practice of law.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dinsmore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/srl-crops\/ed-carroll.srl-crop-1.png\" alt=\"Ed Carroll is chief information officer at Dinsmore &amp; Shohl\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDay one is when we get to work,\u201d said Dinsmore chief information officer Ed Carroll. \u201cEverything else is just planning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But the contents of the final report card will ultimately be determined by the work done by the professionals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe have post-mortems after projects like this,\u201d said Dinsmore\u2019s Carroll.
